He watched her, as she sat, feet dangling, from the topmost parapet looking across the horizon. He wondered whether she could see him watching or feel his watchful eye on her. Seven and a half years ago, when he was introduced to her by fate, she had come across as fragile and demure. A mere five foot to his huge persona, he was confident that she would succumb within a year.
His name was enough to send a shiver down mankind. His temper was legendary and people prayed for his mercy. He was the pall-bearer for Justice and he was merciless in his execution. And yet, this tiny woman had stood her ground in face of adversary. Her smiling face made him cringe in pain, no matter the number of obstacles that he had laid across, she had patiently passed her time off.
But today….
She was tired of fighting with life. Trying to be brave and positive about things that weren’t meant be; the way they were. She was all alone in her struggle. Of course, she had friends and a therapist but they couldn’t understand her plight. Day after day, trying to keep a cheerful demeanor, when actually you are dying from within. She had read stories of people conquering the fate and she was confident that she will too.
Then a year passed and then two…one event after the other. There was a shift in her soul, she was shape shifting into another being. Someone who she couldn’t recognize in the mirror, her smile was just as fake as her. Her confidence, her self-esteem…she lost them one by one. As years rolled by… she started believing that she was bad luck..until..she found him lurking in the realms of her birth chart.
The astrologer had told her to succumb and acknowledge his presence. Pray to him for mercy. But she was angry and defiant and she never believed in demi-gods. “What kind of God rides a crow?” she scoffed and the astrologer had smiled at her foolishness. She wondered now whether she regrets her stance. Tears started flowing as memories came like a flashback. She was stubborn and had made up her mind..she wouldn’t let him win.
But now…
She looked across, staring into his eyes, she could feel his presence, fluttering in the wind trying to mock her for her failure. She had lost everything she valued and now there was nothing more to fight for. She looked down at the miniature world she was about to leave.
He wanted to stop her, praise her for her endurance. Tell her that he had found a worthy opponent and that he, the great Shani*, wanted to bless her with abundance and prosperity for all her sufferings. He would leave her forever, never to come back. Her bad luck was to end with the sunrise.
She saw the moon fading into darkness and she felt the emptiness all around. And before the first ray could give her hope…
She jumped.
